Web Survey Bibliography
Because the time and expense involved in traditional qualitative coding methods are increasingly prohibitive in the modern web survey context, text analysis techniques are gaining recognition as an attractive alternative for qualitative analysis. This paper provides an exploratory comparison of traditional qualitative coding with a series of text analysis and natural language processing strategies. I will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of each strategy and compare the findings from each. For the analysis, I will use the open ended responses from the National Survey of High School Physics Teachers. I will explore the accuracy, depth and breadth of text analysis, and compare it to more traditional qualitative analysis techniques; I will also discuss its wider usability and the implications for survey methodology as a whole.
